“Agrivoltaics” is the merging of agriculture and photovoltaic (solar) panels that capture sunlight. Researchers found that putting solar panels in sheep pastures was a win-win-win scenario.
The sheep grazed the grass around the panels, which eliminated the need for mowing, cutting or even herbicide use. The sheep, particularly the lambs, appreciated the shade from the panels. Even though the shade reduced the amount of forage, lamb growth was similar to that of lambs on the same size pasture without panels. If you factor in payments going to the farmer for the land used for the panels or the energy generated, this becomes an even more attractive option for farmers.
The end result was renewable energy without taking land out of agricultural production.
